Other Options for Treating Hair Loss

More and more alternative treatments for hair loss are being discovered as time goes by. Having a lower cost is but one of many benefits of these treatments. Of course, we would all rather learn how to prevent hair loss before it sets in.

Assuming you suffer no medical problems, your hair loss is likely caused by DHT, or dihydrotestosterone. An enzyme known as 5-alpha reductase transforms testosterone (the male sex hormone) into DHT. DHT kills hair follicles by blocking their blood supply, starving them.

Until recently, stopping your hair loss involved seriously expensive medical treatments. Many people found, however, that, even after spending a great deal of money, the results were still sorely lacking. The world of hair loss treatments drew all manner of “hucksters” that preyed on the pain of others.

When the use of hair transplants became an option, positive results became more certain. The high price of these transplants, however, severely limited their availability to most people. Between the price and general discomfort of these transplants, finding alternative treatments became essential.

For now, Minoxidil is the only OTC treatment for hair loss that is FDA approved. As you may expect, many of the “hucksters” are still out there, so beware of any alternative hair loss treatments that haven’t been independently tested. I’m not trying to dissuade you from trying other things, only suggesting that you choose with care.
