As the economy turns sour, job seekers are putting on their thinking caps and coming up with ever creative ways to get noticed in the job market. From renting billboards, to making themselves a walking resume, getting their potential bosses tipsy and even offering cash incentives, the game of employment has forever changed.

The real question is, are all these stunts and extreme job hunting strategies effective in getting the ultimate reward - The Job! Or will it damage your credibility in a way that you can never recover from even if you do get an initial interview?

First, remember that you should always include a resume cover letter. Even if the employer has not specifically requested a cover letter, you should always include one. This is because the cover letter serves a very important purpose and can provide you with an important advantage. One of the most important purposes for submitting a cover letter with the resume is to let the employer know that you have not randomly selected their company but that you are applying for a specific job. The resume cover letter also gives you an opportunity to let your personality shine through and to provide further documentation that you are the right person for the job.

Unfortunately, the streets are littered with hopeless attempts at getting noticed or initial interest that doesn’t ever go anywhere. So that leads me to believe that even if you try a little creative stuff the tried and true basics better be rock solid. Resume, Resume Cover Letter, Job Interview!

In addition, you should always make sure that you greet the person to whom you are addressing the cover letter correctly. Never make the mistake of addressing the cover letter as ‘to whom it may concern’ or ‘dear sir or madam.’ Either of these salutations is a dead giveaway that you have not taken the time to do your research and most employers are looking for someone who will take initiative. So, help yourself stand out from the crowd by making sure that you take the time to research how you should address the cover letter.

Use the truth well. The job market is tough. Everyone expects spin. And the hiring manager is looking for a reason to cut you. Go over your resume. Find your most damaging fault. Admit it. Describe why the manager should hire you anyway. Why they’ll be fortunate to have you. Then get someone you trust to edit out anything that smells even slightly of excuses, recriminations, or self-pity. If there really is a compelling reason to hire you, your admission will be very persuasive.

While resume cover letter samples are a place to start, don’t depend on them too heavily. You’ll miss powerful opportunities to make your story jump off the page
